Poet and author Dorothy Porter (1954-2008) was one of Australia’s most fierce, original, and groundbreaking literary voices.

Porter redefined Australian literature by weaving unapologetic queer desire and sharp wit directly into the mainstream. Her 1994 bestseller, The Monkey’s Mask, a noir detective verse novel featuring an openly lesbian protagonist, became a milestone for queer Australian storytelling.

Alongside her partner, author Andrea Goldsmith, Porter was a central force in Melbourne and Sydney’s creative and LGBTIQA+ communities. Her bold, visceral writing continues to inspire generations of writers to tell their truths without fear.
