William “Bill” Edwards

Born in Victoria in 1874, William “Bill” Edwards lived as a man for nearly his entire adult life, working as a barman, horse trainer, and bookmaker.

When a 1906 court case brought his identity into the public eye, sensationalist media labeled his life a “masquerade.” Yet Bill’s commitment to his male identity never wavered, and he continued living and working as an “old gentleman” in his Melbourne community for decades.

Tragically, in his final years in aged care, Bill was forced into women’s clothing against his will, a stark historic reminder of the indignities faced by gender-diverse people.

Today, we honour Bill Edwards not as a media curiosity, but as a pioneer of Australian trans history who lived on his own terms.
